This is a complex journey into the recollections and the images of Fini Straubinger, a 56 year old woman who as a result of a childhood injury lost her sight and her hearing. “When you let go of my hand, it will be as if we are miles away from each other”, she explains. Herzog makes an attempt at describing that reality as he uses the shooting process as a way of understanding. He builds a touching account of a mysterious life and a reflection about reality and awareness.

Bokassa istituyó un régimen de asesinato de tortura, succionando la economía nacional en ridícula extravagancia, procreando cincuenta hijos, coronándose a sí mismo emperador e incluso - según se afirma -  devorando a varios de sus enemigos. Como una guía a través de estos parajes infernales aparece Michael Goldsmith, un periodista a quien Bokassa mandó aprisionar y torturar por “sospecha de espionaje”. Entre el reportaje y el documental-ficción, Herzog ddibuja un teatralizado retrato del emperador, reconstruye la pesadilla vivida por Goldsmith e intenta poner en escena una impactante relidad histórica. Hoy en día, Bokassa purga condena perpetua en una prisión militar.

Synopsis:

This film tracks down the legacy of Jean Bedel Bokassa, a less known modern tyrant in the likes of Idi Amin.  He was the dictator of the Central African Republic from 1966 to 1979. Bokassa established a regime of murder and torture, sucking dry the economy with ridiculous extravagances, giving birth to fifty children, crowning himself as emperor and even devouring several of his enemies (so it is told). Almost like a guide taking us through these awful situations appears Michael Goldsmith, a journalist who Bakassa had sent to imprison and torture under “suspicion of being a spy”. A mix between a report and a documentary-fiction film, Herzog draws an exaggerated portrait of the emperor, reconstructing the nightmare that Goldsmith endured and trying to recreate a scene of a shocking historic truth. Bokassa is currently serving a life sentence in a military prison.

Herzog y un pequeño equipo decidieron filmar las últimas imágenes de la isla fantasmal y recoger el testimonio de ese trío que aguarda el fin rodeado por una jauría de perros olvidados. La tentación de lo sublime, que la pequeñez humana revela como gesto patético, y la sensación de final tiñen un relato que no tuvo su final previsto, porque la amenaza se reveló falsa.

Synopsis:

In 1976 scientists predicted the total destruction of the island of Guadalupe which would be destroyed by the eruption of the La Soufriere Volcano. In the middle of the evacuation, 3 men decide to turn back and stay on the island. Herzog along with a small film crew film the last images of the ghostly island and obtain the testimony of this trio that awaits the end surrounded by a pack of abandoned dogs. The appeal of all sublime that the insignificant human race reveals with a pathetic gesture and the sensation of the End, mark this tale with an unsuspected ending. The threat proved to be a farce.

Synopsis:

On the solitary island of Spinalonga near Crete that was once inhabited by lepers, lives an old man who has voluntarily exiled himself. His family considers him to be unstable and wants him declared legally incompetent. They force him to return to civilization. From that moment on the old man refuses to talk he believes he is king and shows up at the taverns by night to sing and play the lyre. Herzog doesn’t focus on the story of the old man, but rather on the issue: why does society isolate a person but ironically won’t allow that person to live in solitude?

The camera follows black birds that fly rapidly, gracefully and perfectly over tremendous masses of orange-colored water that flow onto the earth with colossal force. Walter Steiner is a Swizz farmer who works carving wood. He is also the world-champion of ski jumping. This was filmed as part of the series, On the Border, documentary that deals with the life of Steiner on the borderline of what is physical and what is spiritual, on the borderline of the freedom of flight and self-destruction on the ground. This began the year 1973, when the Swiss Ski team was training in Austria. Herzog saw Steiner jump 179 meters, a height that becomes inhuman, almost extraterrestrial. Ten more meters would surely have meant his death.
